The Company
Gray & Sons
Gray & Sons is a proud, family-run business with a storied history and deep roots in Essex. For nearly two centuries, we have been a cornerstone of the local community, owning and managing a network of tenanted public houses across the county. Founded in 1828 by Charles Stanton Gray, our company has evolved through generations, building a lasting legacy of excellence in brewing, hospitality, and community engagement.
Though our brewing operations came to a close in the 1970s, we have stayed true to our origins by continuing to support the local brewing industry. Our pubs now feature an extensive range of quality ales, showcasing the best of Essex’s brewing talent alongside well-known favourites like Adnams and Greene King. By doing so, we ensure that the spirit of our brewing heritage lives on in every pint served.
At Gray & Sons, we are more than just a business; we are a family, deeply committed to maintaining the values that have guided us for nearly 200 years. We believe in the power of community, and this belief drives us to provide exceptional service, foster a welcoming atmosphere in our pubs, and offer unwavering support to our tenants. As we look to the future, we are excited to continue this legacy, adapting to new challenges while staying grounded in the traditions that have made us who we are.
Whether you’re enjoying a pint at one of our historic pubs or considering joining us as a tenant, you can trust that Gray & Sons will always be a company rooted in family values, committed to quality, and dedicated to the communities we serve.
Our Beers
At Gray & Sons, we take pride in the variety of ales available across our pubs. While we no longer brew our own, we partner with some of Essex’s finest local breweries, as well as nationally recognised brands, to offer a diverse selection of beers.
From traditional bitters to modern craft ales, our pubs provide something for every beer enthusiast.
Honouring Our Brewing Legacy
The Brewery
Although Gray & Sons no longer brews its own beer, our rich brewing heritage is very much alive in the many public houses we proudly support. The historic Springfield Road Brewery in Chelmsford and the Maldon Brewery, Gate Street were once the beating heart of our operations, producing handcrafted ales for the local community for over a century.
